bunga-citra-lestari/ari-lasso-feat-bunga-citra-lestari-aku-dan-dirimu

Ari Lasso feat. Bunga Citra Lestari - Aku Dan Dirimu

tiba saatnya kita saling bicara
tentang perasaan yang kian menyiksa
tentang rindu yang menggebu
tentang cinta yang tak terungkap

sudah terlalu lama kita berdiam
tenggelam dalam gelisah yang tak teredam
memenuhi mimpi-mimpimu malam kita

reff:
duhai cintaku, sayangku, lepaskanlah
perasaanmu, rindumu, seluruh cintamu
dan kini hanya ada aku dan dirimu
sesaat di keabadian

jika sang waktu kita hentikan
dan segala mimpi-mimpi jadi kenyataan
meleburkan semua batas
antara kau dan aku, kita

repeat reff

(Source IndonesiaSelebriti).

how to BOMB YAHOO 100 working

BOMB YAHOO 100% working

Final gmail

How to Write a Cover Letter

How to Write a Cover Letter

Before you are granted a job interview, a cover letter is the first means to communicate with your potential future employer. So you should spend some time to prepare it to give a good impression to employers. The following are tips for writing a cover letter.

Tone
You should be polite in writing the letter. In addition, try to show your strengths and enthusiasm in applying for the job advertised. Use positive words such as pleased, keen, devoted and strong. Length
The letter should not be too long (2-3 pages) or too short (only 1-2 paragraphs). One page with 3-5 paragraphs is desirable. Human Resources staff do not have much time to read through all applications. So, they will not choose long cover letters to read. For short letters, it is impossible to tell the employers much by one or two paragraphs only.

Content
At the beginning, you should state the job position you are applying for. Companies may be recruiting a number of positions at one time and it would be helpful if you state the position clearly to avoid being considered for the wrong job. Do not repeat information in the resume. Instead, address the job requirements and tell the employer why you think you are suitable for the position. You can state your skills and your personalities which match the job requirements. Even if you do want to mention your experience, highlight the accomplishments only. You have to state clearly the documents you are attaching to the letter, including resume, portfolio of work or reference letters. In the last paragraph, let the employer know that you are available for job interviews and how they can contact you.

Signature
Remember to sign your letter if you are going to send it by post.

Proofreading
After you have finished writing the letter, read it over and over again to make sure there is no spelling or grammatical mistakes. Don't just rely on the spellcheck programme installed in the computer. Sometimes a word is not misspelled, but it is used wrong. In such cases, spellcheck programmes may not be able to detect them. Even one single mistake in the letter will give a bad impression to the employer. Don't lose a mark because of that.

Design
Use quality white A4 paper to print your letter. Give enough space between the paragraphs so that the recipient can read your letter comfortably. Remember that every job has specific requirements, and it is essential to tailor the cover letter to every job you apply for. Don't make it a “standard” letter by just changing the company name and position you are applying for and then sending it out every time. In addition, keep a copy of the letter for future reference. You may find this helpful when you are later granted an interview for that position.

Mulan Jamella vs Mr Big - GREEN TINTED SIXTIED MIND (from the latest album)

Mr Big - GREEN TINTED SIXTIED MIND

She just woke up, but she's still tired
Is that the telephone ringing?
The curtains can't hold back the light
That's reaching into her dreams
Down in her heart
If it had fingers, it'd be tearing it apart

You be lookin' groovy
In a sixties movie
Maybe tell the press you died
Little legend baby
Try your very best to hide
A green-tinted sixties mind

She keeps some memories locked away
But they are always escaping
neclgect won't make them fade away
They're reaching into her dreams
Down in her heart
Don't need fingers to be tearing it apart

Gotta face the day
There is no other way
To clear the fog inside your mind
Fill it up with dreams
But all that you can seem to find
A green-tinted sixties mind

Hangin' out with Janis
Movin' to Atlantis
Could've made it if you tried
What's the point of force
It's easy as a horse to ride
A green-tinted sixties mind

You be looking groovy
In a sixties movie
Maybe tell the press you died
Little legend baby
Try your very best to hide
A green-tinted sixties mind
-U can't hide-

Versions of RealNetworks' RealPlayer have been labeled "badware" by the organization StopBadware.org.

Versions of RealNetworks' RealPlayer have been labeled "badware" by the organization StopBadware.org.

StopBadware claims RealPlayer 10.5 fails to "accurately and completely disclose the fact that it installs advertising software on" a user's computer. It also claims RealPlayer 11 is badware because it "does not disclose the fact that it installs Rhapsody Player Engine software, and fails to remove this software when RealPlayer is uninstalled."

Ryan Luckin, spokesperson for RealNetworks, insists that both versions of RealPlayer are not badware, but acknowledges mistakes and user misconceptions exist in both products. He says changes will be made to both version of RealPlayer in response to the StopBadware.org classification. "Neither versions of RealPlayer put users at risk. They aren't malware or install third-party programs on your PC," Luckin says.

According to StopBadware.org's definition of badware it is "malicious software that tracks your moves online and feeds that information back to shady marketing groups so that they can ambush you with targeted ads."

According to Luckin in RealPlayer 10.5 StopBadware.org takes issue with the Message Center feature that pops up messages from the system tray. Messages typically displayed are ones that advertise available RealNetworks' content to listen to or watch and the availability of software updates to the program itself. The Message Center feature is on by default when RealPlayer 10.5 is installed. Luckin says future version of RealPlayer will prompt the user first to activate Message Center. Luckin says the feature shouldn't be considered advertising because no third-party ads are displayed in Message Center alerts.

The issue with RealPlayer 11 is when you uninstall the program it doesn't completely remove all aspects of the program - namely the software (Rhapsody Player Engine software) to view content encoded using the Rhapsody format. Luckin concedes StopBadware.com's point and acknowledges the Rhapsody ActiveX control is left behind when un-installing RealPlayer 11.

Luckin says RealNetworks now agrees with StopBadware.org that all aspects of the program should be removed. "That was a mistake, and we are going to correct it," Luckin says. He was unable to say when and how RealNetworks would change the un-install behavior of RealPlayer 11.

StopBadware.org is a nonprofit consumer organization that is sponsored by Google, Lenovo, PayPal, VeriSign, and Sun Microsystems. Earlier this month RealNetworks faced allegations by security experts its RealPlayer software had a critical flaw and left users vulnerable to hackers.

golden-frog-waves-goodbye-then-goes-extinct-in-the-wild/

There’s something poignant about a final wave goodbye. We’ve all experienced them — perhaps holding back the tears at the airport or bus station, or seeing someone off as they slip away in a hospital bed. The heartbreak is tempered with fond memories, yet those same fond memories can intensify the heartbreak.

Conversely, we hear of the demise of various species often now, yet for most of us, it falls into a part of our mind relegated for things that are either not relevant to us, or to that area in our brain where we store thoughts we don’t know how to deal with, or that we decide are not our problem. There’s no heartbreak, no tears, no wave goodbye. We’re detached, separate, unfeeling.

Today the BBC ran an article on the Panamanian Golden Frog (technically it’s a toad, but let’s not split hairs). It’s an amazing piece of footage of the final wave goodbye (literally and figuratively) of a beautiful creature few ever came to know. Watch the clip.

Welcome to America ... You're Under Arrest

Mr. Sampson, I Presume?

It was about five years ago. I was returning from Pakistan and standing in the immigration line at JFK, completely exhausted after a 20-hour flight. When my turn came up at the counter, the INS agent looked at my papers, typed a few things into his computer, and then asked me to follow him to a large room at the side of the immigration hall. I was informed that I was being detained. Two agents handcuffed me and led me to another smaller room. When I asked what I had done. They said things like, "Oh, you know what you've done. We know who you are."

"Who am I? What have I done?"

"You should know that better than we do, now shouldn't you?"

When I asked to contact a lawyer, I was informed that I hadn't yet been admitted to the United States, and so had no legal standing. No lawyer would be called, nor would I be allowed to call anyone else. They took my cuffs off, fingerprinted me (very difficult because of my sweaty palms), recuffed me, and then left me there.

It was at this point that my knees went a little trembly. I had heard many stories of Pakistanis being held for months without charges under the Patriot Act, and now I had visions of Guantanamo in my head, and I became almost dizzy with the adrenaline rush of fear. I thought that I must have been mistaken for someone else, God knows who, and there would be no chance to clear my name. I sat in that room for a few sweat-drenched hours before a couple of INS officers came in with two police officers from the NYPD. The NYPD officers told me that they had a warrant for my arrest. This immediately came as a huge relief to me, because whatever it was they wanted with me, I would rather be held by the NYPD in New York, than in some INS facility. I felt like whatever it was, I would be able to clear it up.

That's when things started to get weird: The NYPD officers addressed me as Mr. Edward Sampson, as in, "Let's go, Sampson." When I protested that I wasn't Edward Sampson, whoever that might be, they told me that fingerprints don't lie, and I had a full 10-finger match as one (wanted) Edward Sampson. They told me to stop lying and just admit that I really was Edward Sampson. The name sounded vaguely familiar but I couldn't quite place it in my exhausted state. The INS guys removed my cuffs and the NYPD officers replaced them with their own. I was then led out for the perp-walk in front of all the other passengers, coming out by the regular path where people wait for their friends and relatives to come out. People whispered to each other rather excitedly when they saw me being led out, held by each arm by one of the officers, wearing handcuffs and a nice suit I had had tailored while in Pakistan.

It was then that I remembered who Edward Sampson was, and it came to me suddenly: About a decade earlier, my nephew and I had been having a drink at the West End Restaurant and Bar (where Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg used to hang out) near Columbia University (I had just started the Ph.D. program in philosophy there), when four rough-looking characters wandered in. They looked like skinheads, and they sat at the table behind where we were standing at the bar. My nephew had draped his jacket over one of the chairs on which one of these guys was now sitting, and so he tapped the guy on the shoulder to retrieve his jacket. I saw the guy stand up and get in his face, but couldn't hear what was going on. The man then raised his voice and I heard the n-word yelled at my nephew along with a string of curses, after which the man grabbed my nephew's hair with his left hand and drew back his right fist, getting ready to throw a punch.

I hit him first. I had lunged from the side, and my momentum threw both of us to the floor. I didn't know it then, but I was rolling around on the floor of the West End with Edward Sampson.

We were separated by the bouncers of the West End and all six of us were thrown out. Once outside, these guys ganged up on me and managed to throw me to the ground, where I hit my head on the sidewalk. I was momentarily stunned, and had no chance after that. Mr. Sampson pummeled me pretty good. Then the police arrived, and Sampson and crowd quickly walked off. I explained to the police that my nephew had been assaulted, and while trying to protect him, I, too had been beaten up, and that the guys were trying to get away. The police told me that if I insisted on having those guys arrested, they would have to arrest my nephew and me as well, since they hadn't been there to see who started it. I said fine, go ahead and arrest all of us, but I am not going to let these punks get away with this. I figured we would sort it out later in court. And so the four of them were also picked up and all six of us were driven to a precinct where we had our portraits taken, were fingerprinted, etc., before being released on our own recognizance.

After the District Attorney heard the whole story, charges against me and my nephew were eventually dropped, and it was decided that Sampson and his friends would be prosecuted under the hate crimes statute of New York. I was pleased by this, and felt vindicated that I had insisted that the police arrest everyone, rather than just letting these guys walk. Except that those people didn't show up at their hearing, and were never heard from again.

Marine Snipers Scope Out New Tactics

Marine Corps News | Cpl. Scott M. Biscuiti | January 31, 2008
UDAIRI RANGE COMPLEX, Kuwait - Thanks to new sniping tactics picked up by Marine scout snipers in Kuwait, insurgents caught in their scopes are guaranteed to have a bad day.

The Scout Sniper Platoon and Reconnaissance Marines with Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, attended a ten-day training package Jan. 20-30 headed by National Sniper Champion Todd Hodnett who taught the Marines how to improve their lethality with new shooting formulas, shooting positions and techniques.

"Training with Todd Hodnett has taken our capabilities to a level that I didn't think was possible as a scout sniper," said Cpl. Ryan Lindner, a scout sniper with Scout Sniper Platoon and Napa Valley, Calif., native.

"Todd has really revolutionary tactics about shooting (around, over and within buildings.)"

During the training, the snipers where able to effectively engage targets that were behind buildings and many Marines hit targets at distances that they never attempted before.

One particular technique learned on the ranges was shooting loopholes. This technique makes the shooter virtually invisible from enemy detection by allowing him to shoot through a two-inch hole in a wall while 20 to 30-feet away from the hole.

"I've done stuff out here that I've never even heard of before," Cpl. Scott Koppenhafer, a scout sniper with Scout Sniper Platoon, said about the training.

"It directly correlates to everything we would do in combat."

1st Lt. Frank Edwards, Scout Sniper Platoon commander, said the Marines have been using personal digital assistants or PDAs to expand their capabilities.

"PDAs are relatively new to the Marine Corps and very new to our platoon," said the Olney, Md., native.

"It's a quicker, more efficient way for our guys to do math calculations such as atmospheric pressure, wind speed and target range so they can make their adjustments faster."

Using the hand-held devices was a new experience for many of the Marines.

"This is the first time I've worked with them," said Koppenhafer, a Mancos, and Colo., native.

"It used to take a week on the range going through boxes and boxes of ammo to build up data for your rifles. The PDA cancels that out. What used to take a week, now takes an hour."

In addition to learning advanced formulas and using modern technology to gain the upper hand, the Marines prepared themselves for the unexpected by shooting with different ammo and storing the results in their PDAs.

"If a sniper is in a firefight and has to switch to different ammo, he already has the data in his PDA," said Edwards.

As time changes, so too do the tactics and technological advances available to snipers. Learning what they are and how to employ them will keep Marine scout snipers at the top of the food chain, said Lindner.

"Taking what Todd has taught us enlarges everything we can do," said Lindner.

"We can engage targets a lot faster, farther and with a lot more accuracy. It will make us that much more of a combat multiplier out on the battlefield."

Automagically ping blog search engines

Automagically ping blog search engines

I wanted to automatically ping Technorati, Icerocket, and Google Blog Search, that means with no intervention the blog search engines should be pinged. I was alright with a delay of 15 minutes.

So I went about exploiting the XML-RPC services provided by the blog search engines. I came up with this python script. I set up a cron job to invoke the script every 15 minutes. See bellow for the source.

#!/usr/bin/python

import xmlrpclib
import urllib2
import os

from hashlib import md5

feed_url = '[Yorur feed url]'
blog_url = '[Your blog url]'
blog_name = '[Your blog name]'
hash_file_path = os.path.expanduser("~/.blogger/")

def main():
req = urllib2.Request(feed_url)
response = urllib2.urlopen(req)
feed = response.read()
hash_file_name = hash_file_path + md5(blog_url).hexdigest()

if os.path.exists(hash_file_name):
hash_file = open(hash_file_name, "r+")
last_digest = hash_file.read(os.path.getsize(hash_file_name))
else:
hash_file = open(hash_file_name, "w")
last_digest = ''

curr_digest = md5(feed).hexdigest()

if curr_digest != last_digest:
ping = Ping(blog_name, blog_url)
responses = ping.ping_all(['icerocket','technorati','google'])
hash_file.write(curr_digest)

hash_file.close()

class Ping:
def __init__(self, blog_name, blog_url):
self.blog_name = blog_name
self.blog_url = blog_url

def ping_all(self, down_stream_services):
responses = []

for down_stream_service in down_stream_services:
method = eval('self._' + down_stream_service)
responses.append(method.__call__())

return responses

def _icerocket(self):
server = xmlrpclib.ServerProxy('http://rpc.icerocket.com:10080')
response = server.ping(self.blog_name, self.blog_url)
# print "Icerocket response : " + str(response)
return response

def _technorati(self):
server = xmlrpclib.ServerProxy('http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping')
response = server.weblogUpdates.ping(self.blog_name, self.blog_url)
# print "Technorati response : " + str(response)
return response

def _google(self):
server = xmlrpclib.ServerProxy('http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2')
response = server.weblogUpdates.ping(self.blog_name, self.blog_url)
# print "Google blog search response : " + str(response)
return response

main()

When ever the script is invoked it will get the post feed content, and create a md5 hash of it and then compare the hash against the last known hash, if they differ ping the given list of service.

This is very convenient if you have someplace to run the cron job. Even your own machine is sufficient if you can keep your machine on for at least 15 minutes after the blog post is made.

To run the script you need to python 2.4 to later and the python package hashlib. Hope you will find this useful.

Developer makes desktop VR application for PS Eye

Wasn't PS3 supposed to take us to the fourth dimension? Wasn't it supposed to be like entering the Matrix? Right, Crazy Ken?

Well, it appears a lone PS3 developer wants that to happen. By utilizing a Eye camera and some homemade glasses, he's created a VR program that tracks your head and gives the illusion of three dimensionality from your television. (Similar to this famous Wii hack.) It's pretty cool -- and even cooler is that he intends on making this code publically available to all PS3 developers. Hopefully, we'll see a unique PSN title take advantage of something similar.

Intel and Micron develop "world's fastest" NAND -- kiss SSD random write lag goodbye

Intel and Micron develop "world's fastest" NAND -- kiss SSD random write lag goodbye

How do 200MBps reads and 100MBps writes in a storage device sound to you? Pretty sweet if you ask us. That's the upper spec for Micron's new highspeed 8Gb (Gigabit not Gigabyte, kids) SLC NAND co-developed with Intel on a 50-nm processes node. Once slapped together in an SSD, you can expect performance to easily outshine any existing SSD or mechanical drive on the market while easily kicking the SSD bugbear -- random read/writes -- to the curb. The rub, of course, is that SLC NAND is more expensive than MLC so you can expect to pay dearly for that performance. Watch for the speedy Micron flash to pop in cellphones, camcorders, SSDs (and pretty much every portable consumer electronics device out there) sometime in the second half of 2008 -- sampling now to manufacturers.

Squealing and Blinking: An Analog Artificial Neural Network as Art

Squealing and Blinking: An Analog Artificial Neural Network as Art

[ Artificial Intelligence, Link Posts ]
Posted on: January 31, 2008 11:05 AM, by Chris Chatham

Phil Stearns has constructed a 45 "neuron" network of electronic parts which responds to lights and tones with a (rather cute) squealing sound. A picture of the strange device:

AANN-neuron-v2-03.jpg

Each "neuron" consisted of analog electronics corresponding to each of 6 functions: Input, Summing, Threshold, "Offset," "Output," and "Structure" (not sure about those latter three). The connectivity was determined by hand.

Phil states that the sculpture is not intelligent, but rather "some kind of squid baby."

Neural networks have great potential for contributing to the arts. For example, JP Thivierge used results from the cascade correlation learning algorithm to visualize random output values from a neural network:

AANN-neuron-v2-03.jpg

Here's some art from a portion of rat brain placed into a petri dish:

Hybrot Art

And, of course, there's Jonathan McCabe's fantastic network art:

Hybrot Art

Jon McCabe's process is perhaps the most interesting. The color of each pixel corresponds to the behavior of the network at a particular combination of two parameters, indicate by the X and Y coordinates of that pixel. (I get the feeling there is substantial artistic license taken with the results - for example, one interview indicates that each network generates up to 6000 images, and the best are selected by McCabe himself).

Update: jrandom from reddit has also done something similar, by randomly weighting all connections in a three-layer feedforward network with two inputs (x, y coordinates in these pictures) and three outputs (r, g, and b values for each pixel). Here's an example of the result:

Hybrot Art

It sounds like none of these networks were trained to produce good art - but they seem to have some "natural" talent regardless!

The Italian parliament may have unwittingly legalized

The Italian parliament may have unwittingly legalized sharing music over P2P networks. A new copyright law, passed by both houses of parliament, would allow Italians to freely share music over the Internet as long as it was noncommercial and the music degraded.

Italian copyright attorney Andrea Monti told Italian paper la Repubblica (Google translation dug up on Slashdot) that whoever authored the law failed to take into account that the word "degraded" has a "very precise meaning." All music sold on the major music download sites is degraded, whether it's a 192kbps MP3 or 128kbps AAC file. Under the new law, music fans would be able to freely share their (not lossless) music libraries over P2P networks.

The law does limit such sharing to "educational or scientific" use, but the effect of the law will be to make prosecuting P2P use more difficult, Monti believes. Despite that, the president of the Italian counterpart to the RIAA told la Repubblica that the law doesn't faze his group because of those limits.

The new law is a another blow to the music industry, which has seen some significant legal setbacks in Europe over the past few months. Earlier this week, the European Court of Justice ruled that ISPs could not divulge the identities of their subscribers in civil copyright cases, just criminal cases. Such cases are increasingly difficult to bring in some EU nations, as German prosecutors have refused to pursue criminal infringement complaints, calling them "petty offenses." A Swiss antipiracy firm dodged this problem by filing criminal copyright infringement cases, then switching to civil actions once the identity of the 'Net user in question was obtained; the Swiss government has now told them to drop this practice.

Should Italian lawmakers decide that their inadvertent decriminalizing of music file-sharing isn't such a good idea, they'll have to pass another law. The legislation they just passed can no longer be altered, needing only publication in the Official Journal before becoming law.

Punxsutawney Phil on Feb. 2, 2006.

Groundhogs have their day in the sun on Saturday, when Punxsutawney Phil, Grady, Jimmy, Sir Walter Wally and other furry rodents across the country are dragged out to judge whether there will be six more weeks of wintry weather. If the weather is sunny enough on Feb. 2 for the groundhogs to see their shadow, they supposedly pop back down into their lairs and wait out the prolonged chill.

Is there anything to the purported predictive power of Groundhog Day? Not much.

But is there anything at all to the idea that animals can "predict" the weather? You bet.

First, about those groundhogs: When you look back at the historical record, the Groundhog Day story appears to be a blend of several weather-related folktales. Long before the days of Doppler radar, Europeans put great stock in Feb. 2, or Candlemas Day on the church calendar, as a weather indicator at the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Clear weather on Candlemas was seen as a harbinger of snowy weather to come, while cloudy weather held the promise that things would get better in the weeks ahead. Some have speculated that there was a shred of meteorological truth behind the folktale: Clear skies in early February could be associated with persistent masses of cold, dry air that would prolong low temperatures, while cloudy skies could hint at wetter, more temperate days ahead.

The Germans added animal lore to their Candlemas story, saying that if the weather was sunny enough to scare a badger back into its hole, there were more wintry days to come. When German immigrants came to America (and settled in places like Punxsutawney, Pa.), the groundhog took the place of the badger.

Whether we're talking about badgers or groundhogs, the correlation between sunshine on Feb. 2 and extended cold weather appears to be shaky. A Canadian study found that shadow-fearing groundhogs would have a 37 percent accuracy rate at predicting late-winter weather anomalies, or just slightly above chance.

The science of hibernation
Some folks have wondered whether there might yet be something scientific behind the groundhog tale. After all, the groundhog is a hibernating species that occasionally rouses itself during the winter, and perhaps the creature can sense something that tells it whether to wake up for the warm weather or go back into its torpor in early February.

"There's a little bit of truth to that, but with modifications," said Hannah Carey, a professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Carey specializes in the study of hibernating animals.

"For hibernators like groundhogs and the ground squirrels that we study, they're on a biological clock that tells them when to start [to hibernate] in the fall and when to finish in the spring, regardless of external conditions," she told me. "They do arouse periodically throughout the winter. They do this spontaneously while they're underground, but there are no external signals."

During hibernation, Carey's ground squirrels lower their internal temperature to near the freezing point "Our squirrels right now are hibernating in a walk-in cold room that's really like a refrigerator in your kitchen," she said.

Carey said some Arctic ground squirrels can actually bring their temperature down below freezing, "so they somehow supercool in ways that are not fully understood."

Scientists also have puzzled over what controls a hibernating animal's cycle of torpor and arousal. The arousal periods come more frequently as spring approaches - but sunshine and shadows have nothing directly to do with it, since the animal doesn't leave its burrow. "They don't come outside at all," Carey said.

Temperature could conceivably play a part. "It's possible that later in the spring, the warming of the soil around them is one of many signals that tell them spring is coming," Carey said. But the primary factors appear to be body fat levels and the brain's hard-wired biological clock, she said.

Over the long term, that clock could end up being reset to reflect different climatic conditions. Carey said that may be the reason why ground squirrels tend to wake up for the spring earlier in Ohio (February-March) than in Wisconsin (March-April). But Carey said such differences could be explained by an evolutionary response to environmental factors.

If that hypothesis is correct, it would have implications for future Groundhog Days.

"If the climate changes, and we have fewer extended cold spells, those animals that are spending more time above ground might be doing better when it comes to having babies," Carey explained. "Hibernating animals might be bellwethers for how climate affects animal populations."

Animal predictions
If you look beyond groundhogs, you can find a number of cases where animal folklore contains a grain of scientific truth. An oft-cited example is this saying: "A cow's tail to the west is weather coming at its best; a cow's tail to the east is weather coming at its least."

It turns out that the saying encapsulates animal behavior as well as regional meteorology, at least according to North Carolina's State Climate Office. Animals tend to turn their backs into the wind, so that they have a chance of catching the scent of a predator that's sneaking up behind them. In New England, where the saying is thought to have originated, a west wind is likely to bring fair skies, while the onshore easterly breeze is associated with nasty weather.

Thus, the cow's tail could serve as a weathervane of sorts, indicating which way the wind is blowing and eventually giving rise to the folk saying.

This Web page at NASA does a reality check on other bits of weather folklore, ranging from high-flying geese to oft-biting flies. Crickets are among the most intriguing weather indicators: If you count the number of cricket chirps in 14 seconds, then add 40 to your tally, you supposedly come up with a good approximation of the temperature in Fahrenheit degrees. The Old Farmer's Almanac even provides a formula for Celsius cricket conversion.

In most of these cases, it's not really a case of animals predicting the weather. Instead, animal behavior reflects the meteorological phenomena that in turn give rise to the weather. For example, researchers have found that a cricket's metabolism varies with temperature, leading to the differences in the chirp rate.

That being said, the argument is often made that animals are more finely attuned to natural phenomena than we are. That goes for the weather as well as for tsunamis and earthquakes.

In their studies of seismic activity, a fair number of scientists suspect that animals are more sensitive to the relatively harmless P waves that precede an earthquake's strong S waves by a matter of seconds. Chinese and Japanese researchers have gone even further, looking into claims that animal behavior can be a tip-off well in advance of a large-scale earthquake. The evidence on that score is far from conclusive, however.

If you have further examples of the folklore surrounding natural phenomena, feel free to add them as comments below. In the meantime, here's hoping that Punxsutawney Phil, Sir Walter Wally and the rest of the groundhog gang miss seeing their shadows - after this week's weather, we all could use an excuse to start thinking about spring.
